With the world’s eyes on Rio, Parramatta Little Athletics Centre is expecting record registrations this spring, as local children want the chance to emulate their track and field idols.

“Rio is the ultimate showcase for athletics and we’re getting prepared for a big influx of kids trying hitting the track for the first time”, said PLAC president Andrew Murray. “It’s the type of individual sport which all children can enjoy, regardless of body shape, there is an event for everyone” he added.

“Brandon Starc is high jumping in Rio, he’s an elite athlete that has come through Parra Little A’s and still competes for Parramatta City Track and Field. He has made the journey from youth champion right through to Rio. We’re very proud to have played a part in his development”. said club Secretary Ron White.

Staging running nights on Friday evenings is also popular amongst local parents who are increasingly sun smart with their children’s health.

“The twilight running nights at Barton Park are just so good for the kids. They escape the heat of the day, there’s a very friendly atmosphere and everyone can enjoy the BBQ for dinner” said seasoned parent Linda Uslu “All three of my children can’t wait for the season to start in early September”, she added.

Parramatta Little Athletics was established in 1971 and has been offering Fun and Fitness to the children of the Parramatta area for well over 40 years.

“We’re open to children of all levels of ability. Some children join Little Athletics to develop their core athletic skills, others join just to make new friends and stay fit. All our athletes share diverse interests and enjoy outdoor activities as part of a focus on a healthy lifestyle” said Murray.

“Being a volunteer, not for profit club, we just couldn’t function without the help from parents and the generosity of organisations like Parramatta Leagues Club. They’ve supported us for a number of years with vital funds to purchase the wide range of equipment to facilitate successful and safe running nights” stated White.

“We’re extremely lucky to have Parra Leagues in our corner. They never ask for any recognition, just make sure the children get the best from their sponsorship” said Murray.

Online registrations for Parramatta Little Athletics Centre are already open and the centre is holding two registration nights at Barton Park, North Parramatta on Fridays 19th and 26th of August. The centre’s first running night is on Friday the 2nd of September. For registration details and additional information please visit https://plac.org.au
