MEALS FROM THE HEART RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE COOK AND SERVE

4 Jun, 2021

Alive 90.5FM were winners of our Category 2 Community Award for 2020.

As part of their My Local Sports Bag program, Alive 90.5FM partnered with Parra Leagues at the Meals from the Heart, Ronald McDonald House cook and serve on Monday 31 May.

Parra Leagues Board Members Sue Coleman and Richard Foda volunteered their time.

Richard tells the story of this opportunity

On the final day of May, my Board colleague, Sue Coleman and I joined the team from Alive 90.5FM to prepare, cook and serve dinner for 60 families at Westmead’s Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC).

On arrival, Amal Maait, RMHC’s Corporate Partnership Manager welcomed us and acknowledged the unbroken 27 year support by Parramatta Leagues Club and the Parramatta Eels. She thanked our Members, management, staff, players and Boards for, what she described as, the longest community partnership in Australian sport.

She then shared the story of four year old Hamish, who went from not feeling his usual self to being diagnosed with leukemia. This sudden news changed not only Hamish’s life but also his family’s plans. They wanted to be with their son, as he endured the battle of his life. Thankfully, Ronald McDonald House was there to ease the burden by offering a room for the family and on nights like the one Sue and I took part in, a hot cooked meal. They do this every day of every year with the support of 250 volunteers and the generosity of corporate and private donors. They ask nothing from the families they support.

Over the hours ahead Sue helped prepare fried chicken and stew, while I took delight in preparing a colourful coleslaw and cobb salad. We then met many families like Hamish’s and were touched both by the pain in their eyes and the gratitude they expressed for the simple act of a meal they did not have to prepare.

The team at Alive 90.5 FM are a vital part of our Greater Western Sydney community. They bring to our ears key subjects that affect our lives, encourage the sports stars of tomorrow and highlight those heroes that selflessly make a difference. On the night, they hosted their radio show from the lounge room of Ronald McDonald House and featured the great work of the team at Westmead. They even interviewed Sue and me about the difference our Club makes.

Through your ClubGrants scheme, Parra Leagues is proud to support both Alive 90.5FM and Ronald McDonald House.
